Pediatric & Binocular Vision

Amblyopia, strabismus, eye-alignment disorders, vision therapy, and complex binocular vision evaluation. The Carlson family's subspecialty.

What we do

Pediatric & Binocular Vision.

Pediatric and binocular vision care is the original subspecialty of this practice. Dr. Melvin Carlson founded Puget Sound Eye Care in 1978 after completing his pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute under Dr. Arthur Jampolsky. His son, Dr. Matt Carlson, OD, won the Tole Greenstein Award for binocular vision, vision therapy, and pediatric optometry — the same clinical world a generation later.

We see children from age three through adolescence for routine eye exams, but the subspecialty work — amblyopia, strabismus, convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunction, learning-related vision problems — is what brings most pediatric referrals to the practice. The exam is paced for the child, not the chart.

Vision therapy is offered when indicated. Treatment plans are explained to parents in plain language with measurable endpoints.
