Our story · Est. 1978
A practice built by one doctor, led by his son.
Melvin R. Carlson, MD · 1978 · Founder · Emeritus
1978 — a single exam room on N 45th Street, Wallingford.
Dr. Melvin Carlson trained at the University of Washington School of Medicine, completed an ophthalmology fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, and a pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship under Dr. Arthur Jampolsky at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Science in San Francisco.
He has been recognized repeatedly by Best Doctors in America and Seattle Magazine, and served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the UW School of Medicine. He is now retired and not currently seeing patients.
Today — six optometrists, two offices, one family.
Dr. Matt Carlson — Melvin’s son, a Pacific University-trained optometrist and Tole Greenstein Award recipient — leads the practice today. He specializes in the same areas his father did: pediatric care, strabismus, amblyopia, and eye alignment, plus the newer field of myopia progression control.
The team includes Drs. Curtis Ono, Jennifer Andrews, John Tran, Charissa Young (FAAO, FSLS — scleral lens and myopia), and Carol Chou (cornea and contact lens, examinations available in Mandarin). Two offices: the original Wallingford space, and a second on SE 38th in Eastgate / Factoria, Bellevue.
